Joey Masemola
Joey Masemola was born in Ga-Ranuwa. He studied Opera course at Tshwane University of Technology Arts Campus under Pierre du Toit as vocal coach between 2001 – 2003
Whilst studying in Pretoria he performed roles from Mozart’s La finta Giardiniera, Albert Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmermann, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, and Mozart’s Die Zauberflote as student productions. For salon Music company and Opera Africa company he performed roles as the Doctor in La Traviata, Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale, and Ceprano in Rigoletto.
In 2004 Joey won the Friends of the Opera award, SAMRO bursary, and a scholarship from the South African National Arts and Culture to train for the Young Artist Programme at Opera Queensland, Australia. Whilst at Opera Queensland, he performed in productions of Bizet’s Carmen, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, and the role of the Servant in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera. Performed with the Australian Army Band in Australia. He also worked with one of the directors from Covent Garden, Andrew Sinclair.
Joey joined the Royal Academy Opera in September 2005 where he played Krisina (The Bartered Bride) in the Royal Academy of Music Tableaux. He played Chao Sun in the Royal Academy Opera’s production of The Night at the Chinese Opera. He studies with Mark Wildman and Ingrid Surgenor and is the holder of the Parepa-Rosa prize. Outside the Academy, Joey performed the role of Obietu in the Opera SANTE for Aldeburg productions at the Aldeburg Festival.
In 2007 Joey was invited as one of the guest artists at the Australian Embassy Function for the Deputy President. He was one of the guests who were invited to conduct a music workshop at Wits University. Performed for Miss Italian in Sandton Convention Centre.
Joey was also a studio member of Opera Africa Company, also a part-time voice teacher for students at TUT Opera School (Arts campus) and University of Pretoria (Tukkies)
Joey was a music director and a conductor for the South African Reserve Bank Choir and TUT Choir, Garankuwa Campus.
He was also a music teacher at St Dominican Convent School.
He is currently a freelancer Opera Singer, Worshiper, and Music Teacher.
