Khayakazi Madlala

Khayakazi hails from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape. She started singing at a very tender age under the guidance of her brother Sindani Gecelo. Participating in school choir competitions groomed her singing. In 2012 she was part of an ensemble at Mariazell high school that won the SASCE competition.

Khayakazi’s talent was nurtured by her choir conductor Mr. Xolani "Fraser" Gqasana the Voices of the Nation.

During 2015, Khayakazi was part of the Gauteng Opera ad hoc chorus and performed also in specially chosen smaller ensembles for the Company and participated in chorus works such as La Traviata and l’Elisir d’Amore. She performed the role of Evelyn in Madiba the Opera composed by Mr. Sibusiso Njeza.

She started her training with the Gauteng Opera Academy in 2016. In July 2017, she performed the role of Mimi in the Gauteng Opera production of La Bohème at the Joburg Theatre and The Playhouse in Durban.

Khayakazi performed a series of Opera Scenes for the company as Madama Butterfly in Madama Butterfly, Lisa in La Sonnambula, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Gabisile in a South African Opera, Ziyankomo by Mr. Phelelani Mnomiya, Martha in Martha, Julietta in I Capuletti e I Montecchi, Pamina in and First Lady in Die Zauberflöte and Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro.

Khayakazi performed at the Star For Life fundraising concert in Sweden. She also took part in the I Grandi Tenore Durban Potpourri that took place at the Durban Playhouse in September with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra (KZNPO). Later that year she performed at the KZNPO Spring Season Concert also at the Durban Playhouse.

Khayakazi is one of the artists that performed at the Johannesburg Opera Inaugural Concert and has participated in the Online Voices of South Africa International Singing competition where she won 2 prizes, namely, an Audience Prize and the Andrea Catzel Prize. She is currently studying with Conroy Cupido at the North West University.
